Your first research session
Your product-research checklist
Pick one product idea and one Amazon marketplace. Record evidence for each check below. Leave unknowns blank and investigate them before committing money.
Demand: who is already buying?
Write down the search terms a buyer would use. Review several relevant listings and look for recent review activity and seasonality. If using sales or search-volume estimates, record the source, date and limitations; estimates are not verified sales.
Record: marketplace · buyer search terms · evidence source and date · seasonal risks · what is still unknown
Competition: why choose your version?
Compare three relevant products at the price you could realistically charge. Note their price, review count and recurring customer complaints. Write one specific improvement you could deliver and check its cost.
Record: three competing listings · prices · customer complaints · your proposed difference · cost to deliver it
Fees & costs: what remains per sale?
Start with a realistic selling price. Subtract product cost, shipping, Amazon selling and fulfilment fees, storage, and allowances for returns and advertising. Confirm current fees for your marketplace, category, dimensions and fulfilment method.
Record: price − product − shipping − fees − storage − returns allowance − advertising allowance = estimated contribution per sale
This is not net profit: business overhead, taxes and other costs may still apply. Use one currency throughout.
Before an inventory decision: also check category eligibility, product restrictions, supplier samples, product quality and any requirements that apply to your product. Unknown demand or costs are a reason to keep researching.
